Let us cast a 'lot'

We had our first prayer meeting of the year in our new Prayer Shack on the field. During a quite moment of silence, which I am coming to cherish (sometimes we need to listen more than speak to God), I saw the strange vision of a piece of white string, it was so white it was almost shiny but not quite. I thought how clean it was. It was stretched out in front of me and then cut first in half and then into other peices. There was a hand which held all the peices in its palm. I was sad when they were all let to fall to the ground. The peices then fell into a puddle and become unclean.

This vision came to me again the next day as I mucked out birds. I knew I needed to delve deeper. As with all visions the best place to search for an answer if you do not know immediately what it means: go to the Bible! I looked up the word 'lots' and found numerous references. The first being about the priestly duty of Aaron who casted lots for the two goats during Yom Kippur, the feast of the Lord where one goat is offered as a sin offering into the wilderness alive and the other a burnt offering on the altar. There is a lot casted to choose which goat to send where. The lots were used by many men of God in ancient and Biblical times for:

  • Dividing and allocation of land

  • Knowing who is obedient or disobedient eg Jonah on the boat

  • Where people were to live (in the city of Jerusalem or outside)

  • Jesus' garments were casted for by lot

  • To choose a new member of a priesthood / Apostle (to replace Judas)

A lot is a way of decision making for people and community which in our modern day we have lost, apart from a 'heads or tails', which perhaps some Mothers and Fathers still use to sort out arguments between siblings etc.

If done in faith and in a priestly, or Godly function, then lot casting is good, as it allows Father God/Holy Spirit to have 'His say' in decisions which are difficult. The lot enables a level playing field of rich, poor, status and position in decision making.

Perhaps we need to remember to at times take lots in our decision making today more and not let them drop to the ground. It is a clean way to see what God is saying.

Happy 2024, let me know if anything more comes to you with regards using lots.
